A Focus on Standards not the Curriculum

The standards should always come first and not the curriculum.  This year's co-teaching approach places a focus on the standards and to clearly identify exactly what students should be able to do at the completion of Math I.   So our approach was to focus on the following(blue are complete thus far):

  1. Reason quantitatively and use units to solve problems
  2. Determine the structure of expressions
  3. Create equations that describe number relationships
  4. Recognize and solve equations and inequalities graphically
  5. Understand the concept of function and function notation
  6. Interpret functions that arise in applications in terms of a context
  7. Analyze functions using different representations
  8. Build a function that models a relationship between two quantities
  9. Build new functions from existing functions
  10. Construct and compare linear, quadratic, and exponential models and solve problems
  11. Interpret expressions for functions in terms of the situation they model       
  12. Understanding solving equations as a process of reasoning and explain the reasoning
  13. Solve equations and variables in one variable
  14. Solve systems of equations
  15. Summarize, represent, and interpret data on a single count or measurement variable
  16. Summarize, represent, and interpret data on two categorical and quantitative variables
  17. Interpret linear models
  18. Experiment with transformation in the plane  
  19. Understand congruence in terms of rigid motions
  20. Use coordinates to prove simple geometric theorems algebraically
  21. Make geometric constructions
  22. Demonstrate and understanding of SMP’s 1,3, and 4

Teachers collaborate and discuss student learning outcomes throughout the week and change the material to meet the specific learning needs of the students.   We focus on what we want the students to be able to do and what material, exercise, or method of instruction is best to move their learning forward.  Formative assessment is active and concurrent each class period.
